First in Music Analysis
And he is! I’ve been a fan of Bob Lefsetz and a subscriber to his newsletter and blog for more than a decade.
His own web page describes him this way:
Who is Bob Lefsetz
Bob Lefsetz is the author of “The Lefsetz Letter.” Famous for being beholden to no one and speaking the truth, Lefsetz addresses the issues that are at the core of the music business: downloading, copy protection, pricing and the music itself.
Lefsetz is an excellent source of insight, information, analysis and understanding about the world of rock & roll, entertainment, singers, players, record producers, and even movies, books and television. He has parlayed that reputation into a lucrative career as a commentator, speaker, and featured guest at conventions and meetings around the world, all who offer him plenty of money, first class airline tickets, and five star hotels for his attendance. Good for him – he has earned it!
But over the last few years, Mr. Lefsetz has come to think of himself as an expert political pundit, pushing his liberal left coast Democratic talking points upon subscribers who never signed up for that. He forgot what he once told us:
“Being a politician is a profession. Michael Jordan proved that being the best basketball player of all time didn’t make him a world class baseball player.”
And the radical left wing, progressive Democrats, Socialists, DEI enforcers, race-baiting politicians and liberal mainstream media love it! Entertainers, performers, and musicians like myself who gladly signed up to receive his newsletter for his terrific insight and knowledge about the inner workings of the music industry, are bombarded a couple of times each week with attacks against Republicans, middle class Americans, white folks in general and all of the “deplorables” here in fly-over country.
That is his right and I would absolutely defend his First Amendment right in that regard. But in another post, he wrote:
No One Knows Everything? Myself included.
And he goes on to tell us:
“I won’t say no one knows anything, but no one knows everything. So take everything the self-appointed poohbahs say with a grain of salt. Check their qualifications. And if they start weighing in on everything…either their knowledge is very thin in many areas, or they’re lying outright.”
No one knows everything.
Bob Lefsetz is NOT a political pundit. He’s a “self-appointed poohbah” and over the last few years, Mr. Lefsetz has come to think of himself as a political expert, pushing his liberal left coast Democratic talking points upon subscribers who never signed up for that. He writes:
“The truth is whites and the mainstream community don’t care if another Black person dies. Just one less mouth to feed. Yup, that’s the way they see it, that Black people are takers, always wanting more, the government must stop supporting them.”
In a recent post entitled “President Musk”, Mr. Lefsetz wrote:
“Elon Musk destroys first and picks up the pieces later. Musk is making up his own rules for his own benefit. Despite what he may say to the public.”
I honestly cannot emphasize strongly enough how much I respect and enjoy his take on recording artists, celebrities, rock & roll bands, record labels, the Grammys, Ticketmaster, Live Nation, Spotify, and every aspect of today’s entertainment market. He knows entertainment inside and out and tells it like it is and does not hold back. We need that now more than ever.
But his insight, education, background, awareness and experience in the arena of politics is literally embarrassing and woefully inadequate. I have published my own blog for more than five years now entitled:
LefsetzLetters.com
In which I reply to some of his craziest, most inaccurate and offensive newsletters.
If you’re looking for excellent insight and information regarding almost any aspect of the music and entertainment industry, Bob Lefsetz and his blog at “Lefsetz.com” is where you should go. But brace yourself to be bombarded each week with bad faith politics, histrionics, and attacks against conservatives and anyone to the right of Bill Clinton that make Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez look like your friendly neighborhood bartender.
